Intercultural Communication Advancement Program

Announcement: ICAP has now completed its student recruitment through to Fall 2011. However, UBC Continuing Studies has recently added a new program to support undergraduate-level preparation. The new program is named IUSPP, the International Undergraduate Study Preparation Program. The entrance requirements are a bit higher than for ICAP, but it also includes elements of credit study at UBC. Please follow the IUSPP link to find out more.

Program details

UBC's Intercultural Communication Advancement Program (ICAP) is a full-time program of study and training for international students to focus on the specific skills needed to succeed in further academic studies.

There are two streams within ICAP: regular stream and music stream (PRIMA). Each stream includes:

  • academic training at UBC Continuing Studies for 16 weeks
  • approximately 24-28 hours per week of structured activities in the classroom and community
  • opportunities for students to become familiar with studying at a world-class university
  • learning survival skills for university study in North America
  • study led by experienced UBC Continuing Studies academics, faculty and instructors
  • a chance to practice academically without risk to your grade average (GPA)
  • creating smoother transitions for international students to North American universities
  • tuition and fees of $15,500 CAD for the regular stream of ICAP in 2010 or $15,800 in 2011.
  • tuition and fees of $22,000 CAD for the music stream of ICAP in 2010 or 2011.

The development of these and many other skills are designed to support each participant's performance for further academic study and professional life when working, living and studying in an international setting. The program will take place mostly on the beautiful Point Grey campus of UBC.

Music stream (PRIMA)

In collaboration with the UBC School of Music, ICAP also offers a fine arts program in music performance. Admission to PRIMA is very competitive and limited to international students with a high level of musical talent. Primary selection of students will be based on a musical audition; students are expected to submit a video-recorded sample demonstrating their performance ability. PRIMA welcomes students of the following instruments: bassoon, cello, clarinet, flute, French horn, oboe, piano, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, viola, violin, and voice.

The faculty of the UBC School of Music is amongst the best in the world. PRIMA students will receive both private and ensemble music performance lessons with instructors from UBC’s School of Music. Tuition and fees for the PRIMA stream of ICAP are $22,000 CAD.[Top]

Program Start Dates

The start dates for ICAP are listed below. The Winter and Fall session and Spring are busy, full-time sessions with no breaks.

    • Program Start Date for Winter 2010 - January 05, 2010 - Registration closed
    • Program Start Date for Spring 2010 - May 03, 2010 - Registration closed
    • Program Start Date for Fall 2010 - August 30, 2010 - Registration closed
    • Program Start Date for Winter 2011 - January 04, 2011 - Registration closed
    • Program Start Date for Spring 2011 - May 02, 2011 - Registration closed
    • Program Start Date for Fall 2011 - August 29, 2011 - Registration closed

Applicants are encouraged to apply early in order to allow sufficient time for the processing of the Study Permit (visa) by the Canadian embassy or consulate.

Applicants who are delayed in applying or receiving their visa may also postpone to the next available program in the schedule.

Completion of ICAP or PRIMA  does not guarantee admission to the undergraduate programs at UBC or any other post-secondary institutions. Admission to these programs is controlled by that institution’s policies and admission standards.
